Dick's Cycling Blog

dickkelly_photoDick Kelly is an avid cyclist and began riding seriously in the fall of 1958 in preparation for the Little 500 at Indiana University. The Little 500 was the catalyst for a life-long passion for the sport of cycling. Considering the commitment and training required for the Little 500 it seemed logical to try racing. Encouraged from friends and family he purchased his first Pro Bike, a Fiorelli with all Campagnolo components. Soon he was racing in races all over the Midwest and East Coast.

Dick raced in the Olympic Trials in 1960 and has medaled in the Indiana State Road Championships. He is also a three time Gold Medalist, in both road and track, in the Indiana State Games. Dick's most recent racing was as a member of the United States Team in the 2001 Pan-American Masters Championships in Cuba. Other Cycling accomplishments include co-founding the Speedway Wheelmen Cycling Club in 1960. The Speedway Wheelmen are still operating. In addition, Dick was the Director of the Major Taylor Velodrome from 1993-1996. During his tenure there were five National Championships held at that venue. While running the operations at the Velodrome he earned his certification as a United States Cycling Federation Coach.

After 49 years Dick's passion is still as strong as ever, and hopes to ride coast to coast in 2010. One thing is for sure he is riding much better equipment, a Serotta Ottrott equipped with Campagnolo Record 10 Speed components and Zipp 404 wheels. His favorite tire is the Tufo 215g S3 Lite.

How to Select the Right Size Bicycle Frame PDF Print E-mail

I am often asked how to select the right size bicycle frame.  Unfortunately many bicycle stores are more interested in selling what they have in inventory than they are in getting the customer the correct size frame.  Sadly many of those selling bicycles are not serious riders or students of the sport of cycling.  I have heard sales people tell customers that a particular bicycle might be too much bicycle for them.  They must think it has a mind of its own and can bolt out of control.  If you are new to serious cycling I suggest you look for a used frame.  Remember, the wheels and components are, in my opinion, more important than the frame.  Also, do not buy a road bicycle with head tube and seat tube angles more than 73 degrees.

How To Ride in a Group PDF Print E-mail

Pacelines you see in pro racing are organized. They have specific rules. But in big groups like you find in centuries or charity rides, things will be disorganized. This can intimidate even experienced riders.

Sooner or later you’ll find yourself in a big group amid some riders with sketchy skills. It pays to learn how to survive (and also make yourself welcome) in a crowd.

What Type of Tire to Chose? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dick Kelly
Monday, 01 October 2007

This question is often discussed even among bicycle racers and top professionals, and the correct answer of an "expert cyclist" is often based on half truths, false assumptions and failure to understand basic facts.  In reality the answer to this question is not straightforward and generally valid, because it depends on how the bicycle and tire will be used.  Therefore, only general facts with characteristics of available tire types will be listed here:

What is the “Right Length” for your Cranks? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dick Kelly
Friday, 21 September 2007
This is one of the ongoing controversies in cycling circles.  Should you choose your crank length based upon your leg length?  The answer, if you follow the laws of physics, is yes.  I have been arguing this point for years and I can speak with experience since I have been riding 180mm cranks for over 20 years.  It is true that if you drastically increased your crank length in the middle of the season and without adjusting position as well as progressive adaptation you could run the risk of injury.
